Hi,

I'm a lone female travelling in my early 30's looking to travel Jo'burg - Cape Town - Durban using the Local long distance bus service probably intercape or Greyhound.

Just wondering if anyone else has any experience or guidance before I book. In terms of safety and comfort or general tips?

Also thinking of doing the tourist class train on the Jo burg to Cape Town bit. Again any experience of the sleeper cabins and safety would be appreciated.

Thanks

The only concern I've ever had with travelling on the long distance busses has been at the stations themselves - or to be more precise outside the stations. (e.g. when arriving at Cape Town station don't try to walk to Long Street with your bags. Though its possible, low risk and even recommended during the day when you don't have your valuables with you, with your bags it makes you an easy target).

Oh and the best seats on the bus are on the top deck, front row on the left.

Same with the trains, though I've always made sure my bag was with me, closed in the cabin or with someone I trusted when I took the train.

Hi

I've used Intercape twice, once CT to JHB, and another from CT to East London. And I plan to take the Intercape to Namibia at the end of September. The Intercape is very good and very comfortable. Because it's a reliable bus line it can be full, so don't hope for an empty seat next to you. There are several stops along the way even if short, but they make sure you get back on. And I agree with ghalied, top deck is better (although bottom is ok as well). Booking with Intercape is also very simple and the call centre is very helpful; I've called several times and always had great help!

I've also used CIty to City once which was fine but they have 5 seats per row, instead of the usual 4, so it really felt very tight.

When getting off the bus at the rest stops make sure you take all your essential valuables. But that's just common sense of course.

Can't say much about the train. Would love to do it myself one day!

Enjoy your bus/train trips!
