Hi, my girlfriend and I will go to South Africa next week, travel by rental car from Johannesburg to KwaZulu Natal and then south.
My question: How important would you consider booking sleeping options ahead in October?
I prefer to book ahead only a few days to allow flexibility. However I heard places fill up quickly this time of year already.
Any advice? Thank you.

As you will have your "own" car, no need to book except if you want to stay in a specific place.

You are leaving next week, so you dont really have time to book ahead if you wanted to stay in a specific place :-).
In case you plan on overnighting in Restcamps in National Parks (Krüger / Hluhluwe), you definitely dont want to arrive there without a booking. You are travelling in high season, and it will be difficult to find accommodation there. If the Restcamps are full (or none is available in the area you are planning to visit - Krüger NP is hudge), you will have to stay outside of the park, which in my opinion is a big disadvantage. You can check availability für Krüger (and book) on the excellent SANP website: https://www.sanparks.org/parks/kruger/tourism/availability.php.
