Hi All, Do atm's in South Africa use a 4 digit pin or 5 or 6 digit? I have never had a problem in Europe with a 4 digit, but have heard I may need a 5 digit on this trip. Thanks.

I had no problems while in S/AF with my 4 digit pin (Sept to Oct this year). Just keep in mind VISA is more widely accepted in ATMs than Mastercard is.

4 digits will be fine but notify your bank you are going to SA so they will accept International transactions.

There is no "rule". Because it simply depends on what your card requires, the ATM is matching what you entered with what is embedded in your card. If at home that is 4 digits, then 4 digits it is. If it's 5, it's 5. My own (local S.A.) cards happen to be 5, so I presume that's the S.A. norm. But the ATMs don't discriminate! Provided of course what #4 says applies.

My SA card is 4 digits, and I've used it at most of the different bank' ATM's. No problem.

Depending on the bank the pin length varies either 4 or 5 is recognised.
