Hello,
I've got 3 days in Johannesburg in December before a treck takes us north. Would love a relaxing few days on a beach somewhere that's not too dangerous. Would it be better to head over to Mozambique or out Durban way?
Thanks.

By the time you've done all the driving (I'm assuming you're not flying but i could be wrong?) you won't have a lot of time on the beach...
Be that as it may, I'd say head for Umhlanga Rocks / Ballito Bay. They are north of Durban and accessible but out of the hurly burly/grime and (possible) crime of the city.
,

stay in the Jo'burg area... there's plenty of things to do there... all perfectly safe...
I strongly recommend the Cradle of Humankind...

Hi
Im from Johannesburg! and should inform you. Unless you are flying to Durban it is a far way to go for 4 days, as it is a 6 hour drive. Mozambique is 5 hours away plus 1 to 2 hours at the border post which is a nightmare to get through. I would recommend going up to Sun City which is 2 hours north of Johannesburg for a few days as there is loads to see and do there. They have the valley of the waves which is a huge Water park where you could do you sun tanning / relaxing, there is all types of accommodation there from 3 stars up to 5 star hotels depending on you budget. There is Pilansburg Game reserve 15 minutes drive away if you wanted to do a safari and a huge casino in Sun City with good night life and restaurants.
In Johannesburg itself I would recommend doing a town ship tour, Gold Reef city and Monty Casino Bird park. If you are a shopper Johannesburg is the best place to be for huge shopping mails.
Check out this web site is tells you all about Sun City

If you're thinking of driving to Mozambique, most car rental companies charge extra +- ZAR1000 for taking the car into Mozambique (where other countries like Swaziland/Namibia is free).
I second visiting Pilanesberg & Cradle. As for Sun City...uhm... it's all a bit "plastic" but yes it will keep you entertained/busy.
If you're set on the coast, check out cheap airline rates to get there quick: 1time, kulula and mango are the 3 operating in SA. (if you can still find availability)
