Hi,
My group is travelling to Rwanda in May and want to visit several memorial sites. So far we plan to go to the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center on the day we arrive, and see the Ntarama and Nyamata memorial sites on a separate day.

What is the best way to get to Ntarama and Nyamata? Is it possible to see them on the same day travelling by public transportation? Or is there a different option that is affordable to backpackers with a budget? Also is there any sites that I am missing that we should really see before we leave?
Thanks

Hey,

I was in Rwanda in August and visited both Ntarama and Nyamata. There was 4 of us and we payed roughly £15 each for a taxi to take us from Kigali (centre) to both memorials. We got someone from our hostel (one love hostel) to arrange a taxi for us as we were told it was the easiest way. Our driver was brilliant and gave us a lot of information about both memorials and the history of Rwanda on the journey. We left at 10am and were back by 1pm. We were backpacking and on a budget so we thought £15 each seemed really steep but it saved the hassel of organising which bus to get on etc.

Hope this helps!

The following are some more in:

Bisesero – kibuye
Nyarubuye – Kibungo
Nyanza – Southern Province
Murambi – Northern Province

They are accessible via public transportation - Atraco, Stella etc minibuses.

The starkest memorial is in Murambi, in the south.
Take a minibus from Kigali to Butare (135 km) and then another one to Gikongoro (45 km). From there it is about 2,5 km (possible by a local taxi).

You can easily see both Nyamata and Ntarama in the same day on public transportation.

There are public buses between Kigali and Nyamata every hour or so. I can't remember how much it costs exactly, but it should be less than $2. I can't remember the bus company either, but if you go to the street in downtown Kigali where the intercity buses leave and ask, people will point you towards the right one. It's about a 20 minute walk from the bus station in Nyamata to the memorial.

The same bus goes past Ntarama before stopping in Nyamata. I'd recommend that you go to Nyamata first, then take a bus, mototaxi or biketaxi to Ntarama, see the memorial there and get on one of the buses returning to Kigali from Nyamata. If your group is large, it might take a few buses to get you back to Kigali, because there might be only one or two available seats on the bus.
