hi all,

I am aware that flights on the above routes are available from:

Kenyan airlines, Rwandair, Ugandair and (if I could make the website work) maybe brussells air..

but...

I was wondering whether anyone had any prior EXPERIENCE of booking there planned flights on the day or a day before flight at nairobi airport with an agent to get a reduced price...?

I am planning travel in early November.... does anyone have any experience to share having tried this "last minute" approach before?

All replies v welcome.

Athena

hello,

according to your itinerary, here is the offer:

NBO-KGL : Rwandair and KQ operate respectively 2 and 4 flights per day

KGL-EBB: Rwandair and Air Uganda both offer a daily rotation between those capitals. Also on tues, thurs, and sat, Brussels Airlines schedules evening flights to Europe, via EBB as yu stated. Finally a new competitor will challenge the same segment: KLM will launch the 31st of Oct a 5x weekly KGL- EBB continueing to AMS, using an Airbus A330

EBB-NBO: AIr Uganda and KQ have 3 and 4 flights daily

I've tried many time in the past to book and pay the day of departure (mostly with KQ),and everytime at a reasonable fare.
IMHO, Oppositely to European, Asian or American carriers, with a vast choice of booking classes (mostly on a system as "earlier you book cheaper you pay..."), African airlines sell a maximun of 3 types of ticket:
- Economy
- Eco flexible
- Business

Here, basically prices are constant, (no yield management whatsoever), which means if you come hour prior departure, luckily you will be charge as you've reserved 6 months ago, if a seat on the booking class is available, or unluckily be able to try the premium product.

to be honest, there are little chances you will get a cracking bargain!!!

for Brussels Airline and KLM flights, i have no idea if they own a 5th freedom right (= enable to sell ticket on this portion.

hope it has been clear

regards

I have some funny examples to be aware of here: Just for you to imagine air-travel in Africa.
This all happenend late May 2010

Plan #1
Two days prior to flight I booked/reserved a flight Zanzibar-Entebbe-Kigali with Air Uganda.
I got a "confirmation of reservation" and wasn't contacted any more.
I expected to pay at the airport, since the Air Uganda office was closed.
At the Zanzibar Airport there was no electricity, so the couldnt issue a ticket. Damm.. After an hour I got offeret to fly, but for 150 USD more. Hell no! I reserved for 373USD! I'm not going to pay more. More talk talk and talk. OK 373USD them. I'm about to pay, and... They only accept USD in cash? Seriously who carries 373 USD in cash while travelling? (NO ATMs at airport)

Plan #2
Left the Zanzibar airport - hoped to catch Rwandair from Dar-Kigali two days later.
got myself to the office the following day. But hey, they also only accept USD cash. Well well, can I get some kind of reference for the reservation, while going to downtown to get cash (400USD)? - No...

Spendt the next 5 hours in Dar in some kind of Catch-22. No bank would give me USD since I didn't have proof of leaving the country, and Rwandaair refused to print the reference without cash.

The morning of the flight, I ended up using normal ATM and got plenty of Tanzania Shilling, before I used on of the change agencies. Most likely I lost a lot of money in those transfers :)

Bottomline #1: Airtravel in Africa is not that easy, be prepared for the uexpected!
Bottomline #2: Bring plenty plenty plenty of USD (especially if its easy/cheap for you to get it in your homecountry) as the official "tourist currency" in east africa is USD, as a tourist you are supposed to pay in USD on every tourist related activity and its difficult to get it from banks + superhigh commision if paying by creditcard on some upscale operators (up to 10%)

And also: The Rwandaair fligh was really pleassant with a professional crew.
Also Kigali airport was among the better airports I've visited :)

Happy travels!

thanks for that reply- i will go to Africa stacked with USD after that and once I have my e-ticket from my agent I will be a lot more assured as I have paid for the the ticket and so long as I get the e-ticket before I leave UK will be comfortable of my flights - (kenyan airways booking all flights).

thanks though- these stories are useful to share and warn others. :o)
