I meant to post this back in late 2007 when I returned from that Libreville-to-Windhoek trip, but it must've slipped my mind.

From the Oshikango border it cost me 80 Namibian to get to Ondangwa. This cost would be about a quarter of that if you have others along for the ride.

A sim card cost 50 Namibian.

Car Rental options from Ondangwa or Oshakati

  1. Oshakati Country Lodge, next to the police station. Phone +264 (0) 65 222 380/384, or call Friedell directly
at +264 (0) 811248262. This is the Budget Car Rental representative in Oshakati.

  2. Martin at Imperial Car Hire in Ondangwa, working out of the Protea Hotel (formerly the Cresta Pandu).

  3. Tempest Car Hire +264 062 540278, 540029

  4. Cheetah +264 (0) 65231786

Some had cars available and others didn't, and I didn't get a good rate with anyone on zero notice for a one-way rental, but these are the options.

King Nehale Gate

As for getting to the King Nehale Gate of Etosha (yes, it's up there), it's about an hour from Ondangwa to the gravel road near Okashana, then 17km to the gate, then 44km to Namutoni (these may be minutes rather than KM--stupid Chris failed to take note). There is no one up there but the animals so it's a treat.

Etosha (Andersson Gate) to Waterberg

Take C38 to Otjiwarongo, then take the B1 for 27km on to Okakarara road. After 47km on Okakarara road turn left onto the gravel road, after which it's 17km to the park gate. Waterberg number is +264 (0) 67305001. Tours were at 6:15 and 15:30 when I went. It's very, very tame compared to larger parks, but you get a chance to see sable, eland, roan and white rhino if you're lucky (we were).
