Hi there,
we are driving in october for 3weeks from Windhoek to Capetown (visiting Etosha, damaraland, Sesriem and down to cpt via C13/Rosh Pinah with some stops along the way).
we are a bot puzzled on the stretch between damaraland (twyfelfontein) and sesriem: is it possible in two days? and if so, would you suggest via windhoek or down south on c and d roads? We are planning to travel by 2x4 as we read everywhere that it should be no problem whatsoever. The stretch is long and we prefer to reserve more days, but we have some time constraints.

Second question I have is, when driving to South africa from sesriem taking the Nooroever border crossing, we are comtemplating in taking the more scenic route via Tirasberge and Rosh Pinah (we are planning 3 days for that).
Is it worthwile and feasible in the timespan we have and by 2x4?

Help much appreciated!

Just had a play with the routes tool on Tracks4Africa and it shows that the journey is over 650kms.

As you say, taken carefully, the C/D roads are OK for 2x4 but at a steady 60kph it's going to take at least 10 hours.

One option might be to head for the coast from Twyfelfontein via C39/C34 and overnight in Swakopmund. You can then get to Sesriem fairly easily in one day.

Sorry can't help with route to SA.

Hi

Yep, agree with the above. If you stopover in Swakopmund, the drive to Sesriem from there will be 5-6hrs the next day (and an absolutely gorgeous drive for the most part).

Don't forget to go to the Cape Cross Seal Colony on the way down the coast - a "treat" for the eyes, ears and nose ! !

You don't need a 4x4, but consider a 2x4 bakkie - good road clearance and high enough to get spectacular views of this beautiful country (see also my post on Cardboard Box where the bakkie is mentioned). The drive you are doing will be stunning.

We are going to Namibia in September, so I have been keeping an eye on road conditions after the heavy rains this year - some roads are still a problem, closed or only 4x4.
You can get up to date info on: www.tourbrief.com and go to road updates.
Hope this is helpful - have a wonderful trip.

October should be fine and the road conditions are improving daily. There's not much happening at Rosh Pinah, but then as you travel along the orange river it is stunning and worth the effort.

Brillian, thanks for the advice, so will most likely take to road southwest of fish river canyon. We rented th vehicle and only have to do the final accomodation bookings ( etosha seems a bit of a hassle... Most is already rented out...)
