Hi,
We will travel to Namibia in May 2009. We intend to rent a 4x4 SUV with roof tents there.

  1. Does anybody know if all gas stations in Namibia sell Diesel and Regular Gas? Or is Regular easier to get?
  2. Is it necessary to book campsites in advance during this time in the year?

Thanks + Cheers!

Hi!

Diesel is generally easier to get as most utility vehicles (all trucks, buses and most 4x4s and minibuses) are using diesel. If you want to rent 4x4 take the real one not SUV. Real ones are Nissan Navara, Toyota Hilux - they do much better or poor roads, however Namibia has pretty good road (as for Africa).

Booking your campsite is wise, because they will not let you in to national parks without bookings. You can book on the spot but only if plkaces are available.

Hi,
We're going in June. And EVERYBODY adviced us to book campsites, at least for the Etosha camps & for Sesriem.
If you would be travelling in July/August you would even already be too late probably, May is off much more low season.
But still... However I do not like to book beforehand either, we did book our campsites in Etosha (for mid June). Sesriem I still have to do.
Normally privatly owned campsites would be ok, with some exceptions (fe. Palmwag could be wise to book also).
Good luck!

Becasue the heavy trucks use diesel, in a pinch you can buy a bit from them.

booking the campsite won'T be necessary, with the exception of maybe Sesriem and Etosha. I was advice to do it for december-january, which is middle season, but we would have been fine - except one night out of the four, there was always space availble in the campsite. But we did share our campsites... and with booking, comes the piace of mind to sleep exactly where you want - especially for Sesriem, where there's only a fiew option around - Sesriem Campsite is expensive, but really the best if you want to see the dunes at sunrise!

About camping resevation , it depends about your dates of travel : in March , I've made no resevation and there was a lot of empty pitches in Etosha and Sesriem each night , and for this reason it's a good season to travel : Almost nobody in Sesriem and very few people in Etosha , but a lot of animals ( but not at waterholes).
