I have a car rental booking with Avis but I can't find out if avis require an international driving permit. I have a UK driving licence.

The general consensus is that it is not needed but I don't know if avis have their own rules.
The contact form on their website doesn't seem to work and I can only find information on the avis south Africa website.

Thanks

So long as your home-country driving licence is in English, you should be fine. i've driven in about half a dozen countries in the region and never once been asked for an IDP, even in countries like Mozambique where English is not widely spoken.

No, it's not needed Namibia only requires that the licence is in english, the car rentals usually care even less about it, I could have rented with my german licence no problem.

The problem could have started at the raod block around WDH when the police officer wanted to see my IDP.

I always hire cars and travel around using my Irish driving licence. Never had any problems, either with car hire people or the standard police road checks
