We are trying to decide between a basic gps unit (position, direction) vs a gps unit that includes a road map of Namibia.
Will will be self-driving for two weeks hitting all the major destinations.
Given that the cost difference between the two units is significant, does anyone have an opinion re. the utility and worthwhileness of a map unit gps?
Thanks.

If you are not going seriously off roading then you will not need a GPS. Get yourself a good road map of Namibia especially one that shows you the road numbers. The road conditions are the best in Africa, including sign postings and road numbers. I use Garmin III+ when I visit the remote parts of Namibia with my Land Rover but then I stay in the wild for longer than two weeks. I save my tracks onto a laptop as there are no portable GPS available that will log your traces for two weeks, you will need a laptop to download or additional storage device. Rather invest in a good camera with telephoto lense and a big flash gun (light) with many storage cards.

Investing in a gps for 2 weeks, especially when it is doubtful you will get off the beaten path is a waste of money. If you still feel the need, some of the vehicle hire companies rent out gpsrs. If it happens to have Tracks4Africa maps, so much the better.

I have never quite understood the need for a GPS in Namibia. Even the great city of Windhoek is navigable without it. With an old-fashioned road map in hand it is very difficult to get lost - unless you do trips into the back of beyond..

There are some of us that don't like crowds and also like adventure.

Yes, LB. That is why I added the rider about going to the back of beyond - which I do not believe the OP intends to do.

I bought myself a simple Garmin Nüvi device and downloaded Mapsource (free) and the Namibia map of Tracks4Africa (110 rand). Maybe not essential to have, but it seems like adding to the comfort... Off course we have a good map as a backup. I wouldn't have bought it just for Namibia though...

Hi,
There is a book called "Roadside Geology of Namibia" that describes what you see as you are driving the roads and trails of Namibia written by Gabi Schneider. She was head of the Namib Geological Survey when I was there. It pretty well covers all of Namibia and has pen drawings of what you see as you are driving.
Came in 4 languages. Well worth it. Survey is also worth a visit before travelling.

Gabi Schneider--do you know where we could find the book by this author that you mentioned? I checked Amazon.com, and couldn't find it. It sounds like a fun book to have as you do the long self-drives around the country.

Hi,
I bought mine in a bookstore in Windhoek.
You will probably have to look in Europe or the survey office in Namibia.
