Would greatly appreciate any suggestions with regard the following. We (two adults and one child 13 years) have four weeks in Botswana and Namibia this (European) summer. We pick up our landrover in Joburg and have the first 3 weeks basically booked and mapped out but are a bit stumped as what to do with the last week. We have until the 6th of August booked to Etosha and have to be back in Joburg on the 13th. Does anyone have any suggestions for a route back to Joburg for this last week? Ideally we would like to visit en-route the San people if possible, we have camping gear but stay in lodges is also possible. Any suggestions for a route Etosha-Joburg, not rushing it, much appreciated.
hi diana
will you travel johannesburg - botswana - caprivi strip - etosha and have one week from there on to get back to joburg ? and if yes, have you been to other parts of namibia (like damaraland, swakopmund, sossusvlei) before ?
if not, you will of course not be able to the "all of namibia but etosha" in one week and also travel back to joburg, so you would have to choose the place that appeals most to you and visit the other places hopefully on later trips.
my only experience with the san people was in the kalahari south of windhoek, it was very interesting but also quite "touristy" (there were not many other people around, but it was a meeting made up for tourists).
kgalagadi transfrontier park might be the place you are looking for. i believe about 50% of the land there belongs to the san people. i havent to the park yet, so cant comment from personal experience.
What's your route for the first 3 weeks - it would help to know to then give recommendations for the 4th week. Though be prepared to spend much of that last week driving - it's quite a distance to cover.

Thanks ever so much for replies. Our route in short is the following: Start Joburg/ Nxai Pan/Chobe/Moremi/Okavango Delta/Rundu and then four days in Etosha.
As you can see we will be mostly focusing on Botswana so will have to save Namibia for a future trip. Thanks for the suggestion Kgalagadi- sounded perfect. Unfortunately just checked out Sanparks site and see that everything is fully booked in the restcamps for our dates. So further suggestions most welcome.
I did expect the visit to the San to be a bit touristy, nevertheless still planning a trip as my son really would like to do this. I saw some tours from Windhoek which also involve an overnight stay. Anyone done this, any recommendations for a tour company?
To be honest I think it is a bit of a hassle to drive from Etosha to Johannesburg as the shortest route will take you at least 20 hours.
Have you considered to visit Windhoek-Namib dunes-Swakopmund? From Etosha that would be a great one-week-trip.
Most car rental companies have a decent price to pick-up your rental and drive it back theirselves, and you conveniently fly back to Joburg from Windhoek!
