Hi there, we just found out that my husband can take 6 months leave and we decided to use some of this time to travel with our kids aged 7 and 9. Unfortunately due to school holidays we are not that flexible on the time frame.

Having been to Botswana (prekids) and SA (prekids and with our kids), we would really like to visit Namibia. We are looking at 3 weeks - 15 Oct to 6 Nov. We would like to go camping and take a 4x4 with 2 rooftop tents (I know, not necessary but we would just like the experience).

However, since we are late in making plans - will Etosha camp sites be fully booked (and if so, what are the alternatives?) and is there a need to prebook campsites in the rest of Namibia?

Thanks for your sharing thougths!

Hi,
You are going at the beginning of the rainy - humid season.
That may be a poor time to visit Etosha.

I stayed at Mount Etjo Safari Lodge which was quite nice.
If you stay at the outpost cabins, the bar is abot 4 m from a water hole where animals come to drink.
Also have a lion feed which shows the poor table manners cats have!

I have been to Namibia twice in late Oct/early November. I think it's a great time. Chances are it will still be dry - for the first couple of weeks at least. And it's not too busy. Peak times are June - September. Contact NWR to find out how booked they are but I think you'll be fine and if Namutoni and Okakuejo are busy Halali always has space for camping. It is fairly easy to find camping alternatives at the two main gates. At the eastern end we love Onguma (private bathroom per campsite - fabulous restaurant) . At the western end Etosha Safari Camp is fine.

Elsewhere in Namibia it depends where you want to go - Sesriem may be busy for example, Damaraland less so but generally I'd say you'd probably be OK not booking most places. If you indicate where you'd like to go I can make some suggestions re campsites. Namibia has some truly awesome camping opportunities.
