I'm travelling (alone) to Namibia to do elephant conservation work in Damaraland region in March 2011 and will be staying for a month. I was wondering if anyone else had done this type of work before or if anyone has plans to do this type of work.

I've never travelled on my own before and would really appreciate any advise on what to expect. I have a list of items that I need to take with me and was wondering if anyone knew of good inexpensive shops to check out.

I need

3 season sleep bag and sleeping bag liner
Mosquito net
Lightweight trekking boots
Soft kit bag
Daypack (large enough for fleece, med kit, binocs, sunscreen, lunch and water bottles)

Most other things are fairly easy to source.

Thanks

Hi,
You did not say where you are starting from!
If in Canada you can buy good equipement at Mountain Equipement Co-op but it will not be cheap.
Canadian Tire has mediocre stuff that is cheaper.
Last I heard, you can buy treated mossie nets at travel clinics.
My big backpack has a day bag attached that can be removed.

Hi!

It looks like we're going on the same volunteering project, and possibly at the same time too! I'm off with EHRA from the 14th March 2011 for two weeks. I'm then going to travel around Southern Namibia for a further 10 days (solo or with anyone I meet during the project).

This will be my second volunteering project in Namibia. It's absolutely stunning, which is why I'm going back.

With regards to the kit list, I'm not sure I can be of much help. I'll be going to have a look at some outdoor/adventure shops this week-end. The trouble is that things like sleeping bags and trekking boots don't come cheap. I would definitely advise a 3-season sleeping bag, as it gets quite cold at night (I feel the cold a lot, though). Although one of the girls from EHRA told me she rolls herself into a warm single duvet, and that does the job for her.
Trekking boots will be really important too (probably worth investing in some good ones to avoid sore feet).
Shops like Cotswolds Outdoor and Nomad are really good, and seem to have offers on various things at the moment.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help!

If we are in the same group I look forward to meeting you in Namibia :-)

I have managed to get a large kitbag with a day pack attached.

Thanks for your help

Yeah im going through EHRA too although i'm starting on 28th March - 22nd April so it looks as though I will be starting just as you are leaving which is a shame. Have you got travel insurance? it says that we need to be covered for all eventualities including air rescue... just wanted an idea of how much it will cost and if there are any insurance companies that you could recommend?

I think I will invest in a decent pair of boots but like you say they don't come cheap. I think I might check out some ebay shops and see what they have to offer.

Thanks for the help. Hope you have a brilliant time :)
