Hi all,

Got a couple more of questions. Hope you can help

  • If reaching Etosha from Opowo, how long is the drive?
  • The nearest entrace coming from Opuwo is Anderssen Gate?
  • From Opowo any interesting suggested itinerary/villages to visit the Himba people?
  • Is 1 night good enough? What about going fruthr up north?

a) About 450km - that should take you around 6 hours.
b) Yes, except for a private concession entrance at Kowares in the west.
c) At Epupa Falls there is a Himba village; Opuwo is the "capital" of the Himba people. There is a Himba village near there that others have mentioned on this forum - do a search and you should find something on it.
d) Good enough for what?

I went to visit a Himba village about 20km from Opuwa... no idea of the name of it though, sorry. Easy to get to in a 2wd though. The guide (who was 'ex-Himba') came in my car and directed. Just ask the people wherever you end up staying in Opuwa. Seems like a small tourism network is building up there, and you'll probably end up being sent with a guy named Jackie (or Jeckie, I think). I was passed though about 4 hands... and ended up joining up with a small group of 4 others. Was very interesting. We took gifts of cooking oil and maize flour. He'll help arrange all that and tell you how much is appropriate etc
Not really much else in Opuwa (that I saw), so 1 night should probably be enough.

Forgot your other questions! I will stay two nights camping at Epupa. The local Himba offer tours to their villages and there are several hiking options down to the west along the Kunen River - great photo oppertunities. Epupa Falls is something special to me.
