I just posted a thread about petrol in Opuwo and then Epupa.

Just wanted to know a little more in regards to petrol.

I have noticed it is about 175kms from Opuwo to Epupa. How long would this take? 3, 4, 5, 6 ,7 Hours????

Just wondering in regards to how much fuel we should stock up on then, as all information will be most appreciated as I do realise this is really something that I need to plan for.

From memory, Opuwo to Epupa is about 3 to 4 hours.

Oh, also meant to say that so long as you fill up in Opuwo, you will have plenty of fuel to get there and back. There's fuel In Ruacana too if you need it although you won't be able to take the direct route along the river. That's 4wd only. As a general observation, wherever you are in Namibia, you should be aware of how far away you are from filling stations and plan your refulling strategies accordingly. Don't leave it to chance; make sure you know where you can get gas.

Thank you for that info, really does help out as it was the only stretch of the trip I was unsure would have petrol or not.

Thanks again!

If staying on the main roads a general rule of thump for gravel roads is: devide distance buy 60km/h. Even if gravel roads in Namibia are in good condition, 60 - 80 km/h is a very safe speed. Given the low kilometer per hour, you will have enough time to see things along the road as well as some stops. Opuwo is the last stop for fuel on the main road to Epupa Falls and if you do not have a 4x4 and not going to do the extreme rocky Kunene Trail from Epupa to Ruaccana, you have to come back to Opuwo. The other route from Epupa is via Van Zyls Pass, Rooidrom, Puros to Sesfontein (Petrol), but you will need a 4x4 for the leg to Van Zyls Pass. Driving between 60 and 80 will give you good fuel consumption!
