HI FRIENDS,

I'm wondering if any of you stayed in a kick ass hostel in Windhoek or Swakopmund that you'd recommend?
I'm traveling with my husband, so if any of these hostels allow you to get a room to ourselves for more cash, all the better.

I tried searching previous comments, but the topic isn't specific enough so it was hard to sift through all the information.

Cheers!!

I always stayed at Swakop Lodge (Grunen Kranz) - good location just a few minutes to the main street in town. They have all the services and facilities you'd expect, was always very busy when I was there (lots of overlanders), great atmosphere, would highly recommend.

There's also a kick-ass italian restaurant called Napolitana on the same street - after months in East Africa it was always such a relief to get to Swakop for one of their pizzas (or, if you're more carnivore-inclined, some ribs or game meat).

In Windhoek if you want a hostel with private rooms Chameleon has private rooms. They are basic but adequate.

In Swakop we stayed at the Beach Hotel. It was quite nice but a bit out from downtown. The restaurant at the hotel was quite good with beautiful sunset views.

In Swakop, have a look at Villa Weise - it's an easy walk out of town, close to the railway station and there's a big supermarket at the end of the road.

Are there any good hostels relatively close to Etosha? I heard there may be one in Otjiwarongo, but I'm open to places. We will be staying in the park for 4 nights, and I'm sure we will want an actual bed afterward to sleep in.

Thanks.

I'm hoping to hit Sesriem Canyon, Sossusvlei, the Cape Cross Seal Colony, Damaraland, Etosha National Park and Waterberg Plateau Park. Can people recommend places with private rooms (hostel, guest house, lodge) for a mid range budget?

in windhoek the olive grove was very nice and had good breakfasts; in swakopmund we stayed at the secret garden but quite average.

the real kick-ass lodges were the dune lodge in sossusvlei and opuwo country hotel in opuwo. aabadi camp was lovely but in terms of place, atmosphere, but only had tents
