IS it easy to get visas at the boarder between SA and Mozambique when driving?

You should have no problem. They cost R172 last year as opposed to about R750 from the embassy.

In essence, it's not complicated. It helps if you speak Portuguese but it's by no means essential. I'm assuming you plan to go through Komatipoort; It can feel a little overwhelming due to the sheer number of perople milling about and the fact that, due to the language barrier, you may not feel wholly confident about what papers you need to complete and where you need to take them. You will presumably have to buy insurance as well.

You will get approached by lots of touts, all offering to smooth your passage through. Whether you take up their offer is of course up to you. Some view them as pests; all I will say is that they will know exactly how to complete all the forms and who to take them to. They will also help to get your papers to the front of the queue so they may be useful if you want to get through speedily. You should not underestimate the capacity of Mozambican customs and immigration officials to make your life awkward if you have not filled in your forms exactly by the book. If you choose to use a tout, expect to pay something in the region of R100 although I daresay you might be able to beat them down a bit. I will leave it to you to decide whether that's value for money.

One last note. Whether or not you choose to use a tout on the way in to Mozambique, do not under any circumstances take up their offer when you're on the way back into South Africa. You absolutely will not need one; getting back into SA is a breeze and takes a matter of minutes.

I really appreciate the tip..I'm hoping my Spanish, will help me out a bit...it might be easier just to hire someone to help us with the papers.

@ Boomslang:

I fully agree with what you said about those touts at the border, but I never gave them more than 15,-R for their service ( ...and none of them ever complained about the amount ).
100,-R is still a lot of money, if you compare it to an averange monthly wage of a black worker.

Oh dear, Seems I have been, um, taken advantage of perhaps? He was very helpful though...guess he should have been, at that price.
