Behind the tea plantations of the indians around the beatiful town of Gurue you can find a few valleys and mountains to do some trekking. It is possible to go on your own if you speak some portuguese and ask for the paths, even to the Mount Namuli, the second highest peak of mozambique. The best part of the hike is the valley to the mountain and around. There are also some waterfalls near town for a day hike.
If you prefer to go with a guide trough pensao Gurue or pensao Monte verde you can contact Jefson(Eureto), a local boy that can guide you and would be more than happy practising his English. He is a musician with a small group called "os planaltos de gurue", you can find a song in youtube. Inevitabily you will reach to Know the Queen of the area, in the Mucunha village. And his son Yomi who makes an excellent sugar cane liquor in his destillery.
Around Gurue we spent some days in the local villages, there are very few tourist, it is pristine beautiful and the "Lomwe" people is the friendliest of moçambique, calling you "Asuku" as passing by.
You can camp in the places the villagers show to you or you would be invited to sleep in thir houses with a lot of smoke and chickens, at your choice. Take some presents like "farinha" with you instead of money.
