Hi again,

We are flying into Pemba around the first week of May. Is the most conventional way to get to Ibo Island on a place booked at the travel agency? (the book says $110 per person through agent Kaskazini) Has anyone taken the Dhow option? What was that like?

Also we were told that Cinco Portas is closed in May and Miti Miwiri is unreachable (emailed 3 times). Panela Africana does not have an email address. Are there any other new options on the Island?

Also I've heard of nice day trips out of Pemba, apparently there are national parks and reserves that you can reach by public transport. Does anyone know of the locations?

Thank you!

Hi samuraigirl,

As far as we know, those are the only accommodation options on Ibo Island. The best/quickest way to get from Pemba to Ibo is with the air charter company, CFA. There website is www.flycfa.co.za.

As far as day trips out of Pemba are concerned, it's best to ask Kaskazini, as they know all the options. I have heard that Murrebwe Beach is lovely, and Kaskazini can arrange transport for you. It is just south of Pemba town and they have a beautiful beach, and there is also kite surfing available there.

Regards,
Rani

Hi there,

We took a dhow, it was quite a hectic experience! The wind was howling and because of the tides we could only leave at midnight. We kept hitting sand bars in the pitch darkness and the dhow was heavily loaded. Suffice it to say, we waited for clear skies and calm seas for our return leg and it was great :)

From Quissinga we took a cab to Tandanhangue (pronounced tanganyaan if I remember correctly). We reached some mud flats and the taxi driver refused to go further but pointed us in the right direction, we eventually reached a big baobab, that's the jump off spot to Ibo.

We also stayed at Miti Miwiri, we were the only people there so they gave us a massive discount.

Oh and watch out for the terrestrial crabs :)
