I am traveling with my girl friend to Mozambique in April, and flying into Maputo for a couple of nights, and then plan on heading North. Unfortunately we have a limited amount of time, and are torn between going to Inhambane or Vilanculos... Has anyone been to both, and would they recommend one over the other?

I have been to both: Inhambane quite recently and Vilanculos many years ago. On balance, I would opt for Inhambane. Reasons are:
It's closer. If you only have limited time, getting to Inhambane will take less time.
There's more going on in Inhambane. Vilanculos is (or was, when I was there) the gateway to Bazaruto but didn't have a lot of intrinsic interest. Inhambame (and Tofo especially) have more in the way of accommodation, bars and restaurants.
There will probably be more other people in Inhambane or surrounding areas like Tofo than in Vilanculos. That may or may not be a good thing, depending on your point of view.
