In a few weeks from now, I will be traveling from Malawi into Tanzania. Instead of going directly via the Malawi – Tanzania overland border crossing, I am now thinking of adding a small corner of Mozambique to my itinerary. The route that I am considering:
- from Malawi, take the Ilala ferry to Likoma island
- there, arrange a “local” boat to Cobue (Mozambique)
- from there, travel on (via Segundo Congressa) to Songea in Tanzania
A few questions I have regarding this:
1. Feasible route, indeed public transport available? Rough, or easily doable? (Or: is it worth it? Any better / nicer alternatives?)
2. Especially: is the Ilala ferry running? I see messages on this forum that has stopped… or maybe hasn’t stopped… some confusion anyway. Any updates / schedules?
3. From Cobue to Songea: is that one day? Or stay somewhere overnight? If so: where?
4. Can you get by (this part of) Mozambique without speaking any Portuguese?
5. Any difficulties for the border crossings? Is it true that for this route, you best arrange both the Mozambique and Tanzania visa in advance?
