I need to get from Tofo/Inhambane into Malawi (ultimate destination is Nkhata Bay) overland (flying is quite expensive). Has anyone done this route and have any tips? It seems as though you could string together lots of minibuses to get there, but I'm wondering if there's anything more direct than that. Thanks!

I've done this the other way so I guess the route would be the same. From Tofo/Inhambane take the 4:30am bus north towards either Beira or preferably to Chimoio. You should get there in the afternoon or early evening. Get up the following morning at 2:30am and get the 3/4am bus to Tete. From Tete get a bus to the Malawi borer and then you're about an hour and a half from Blantyre. From Blantyre get the bus to Mzuzu and then you can get a bus to Nkhata Bay. Overall you're probably looking at three days of buses so best of luck!

now that i've done it, here's how it works in case anyone else is looking for the info!

from vilanculos, there is a bus to beira every day except sunday that leaves around 4 or 430 am. (as far as we know there is no bus from vilanculos to chimoio). take it to inchope, get off there and take a chapa to chimoio. spend the night at pink papaya which is 4 blocks from the bus station. the next morning, you take a bus from chimoio to tete which leaves at 4 am. from tete, you cross the bridge and on the left side flag down a chapa going to zobue. border formalities at zobue, then taxi 7 km to the malawi border formalities. then take a chapa to blantyre (2 hours). yuo can do it in 2 days.

we left vilanculos on a sunday so the beira bus wasn't running. therefore we took a chapa to the pembara junction (20km from vilanculos on the N1). from here we hitched with a truck to inchope. supposedly we could have waited for a bus coming from maputo or maxixe going to beira or chimoio, but we never saw any so we hitched.
