Hello

I'm hoping for some advice from people who drive in Mozambique, as I'm a british woman about to hire a car for a road trip (Moz/Swaziland/South Africa)
- firstly, I only have a UK driving licence, is that going to cause me a lot of trouble either for hiring a car or at the borders?
- secondly, how likely are we to get stopped? (I'm mainly thinking about the driving licence situation)
- thirdly, does any one know where I can get an international driving licence in Maputo, and how long it would take?

Thanks for your advice
Miriam

You can drive on your UK license in Moz. If stopped it will be for an infraction and they will be looking for money, it happened to me three times in 3 months, I paid once and got off twice.

There's no such thing as an International Driving License - what you may be thinking of is an International Driving Permit which can only be issued in your home country, you can get the forms at main Post Offices in UK.

Not having an IDP won't be a problem - your UK licence will be fine. In over 12 years of driving around Africa, I've never been asked once for anything other than my home-country licence.

How likely are you to get stopped? Almost certainly. Road blocks are commonplace and you will very likely be asked to produce your licence. The other risk you face is being stopped and "fined" for some (usually wholly invented) offence. Best way to lower the risk of this is to observe the traffic rules to the letter, ie do not speed - EVER - and do the other things they require, like have a hi-vis jacket (which must be draped over the driver's seat-back) and two warning triangles. Your hire company should provide these. Even so, they may try it on anyway. Last time it happened to me, my son was allegedly "not wearing his seat belt in the correct way". Whether you then pay is a moral and practical dilemma for you, along with a test of nerve (and also of your bargaining skills)..... in my experience the risk of this is greatest in and around Maputo. The further away from there you are, the lower the risk.

Just came back from traversing Mozambique south to north, - pls p-emailme if you have specific questions? The IDP is not necessary, only the driving licence of your country. We were asked to present with the proof of insurance also on couple of occasions and to see the content of your turnk that's all. To summarize - by all means do not give the Moz police to give them a reason to stop you and give you hassels, etc. Obey the speed limits and road rules and you willl be fine. Moz is such an increadible country - enjoy it to eh fullest.
