Hi - just seeking some quick advice:

I intend to fly into Pemba in late Dec for 10-11 days. Hoping to spend time on the Quirimbas Archipelago. One idea was to also visit Ihla de mocambique, by hiring a car and driving down or on public transport, and then flying back to Dar from Nampula. I'm guessing it would cut the island time by 3-4 days, i.e. 1 day driving to Ihla, 1-2 days there and then 1 day driving to Nampula to fly back to Dar. Does it make sense as an itinerary (i.e. worth seeing, better to fly out of Nampula - how is it c/f pemba?) or is it any worse to just do Dar-Pemba-Dar and drive back up to Pemba from Ihla. I know the distances are less but the roads may vary in quality?

Any input would be welcome!

asante!

The roads from Pemba to Ilha and Nampula are all tar and of good quality if slightly different widths - the roads from Namialo to Metoro and Monapo-Ilha are narrower than the others. I've done Nampula-Ilha (lunch)-Pemba in an easy day's drive.

Hi there,

From Pemba you could also travel to either Matemo or Medjumbe.
They all have resorts. You can connect to them via light aircraft transfers.
Ibo island is also in the area. They are really a must see and then you can just relax.
And enjoy more holiday time not having to drive.

Thanks for the replies !

Yeah the plan is to go the islands but if we have time and desire to head to Ihla for a day or two.. so think will just fly in and out of Pemba. Used to Tanzanian roads and driving there so if the roads are tarred etc, and car hire is reasonable, perhaps an option to see a little bit of the area south of Pemba . or alternatively, find something else to do on the mainland.
