I'm guessing that the mighty greenback reigns supreme although if you do opt for these over Euros, make sure that you only get bills that have been issued in 2006 or later years, For some weird reason, if your dollars were issued before 2006, they really don't like 'em. Never did figure out why.
Do you have to change hard currency though? Mozambique has a really excellent network of ATMs which pretty well all take foreign cards. I was there a month or so ago and I was really impressed. Pretty well all decent sized towns will have a couple of ATMs now. I only went up as far as Tofo but I am guessing major towns - even in the north - will all have ATMs.
can't help you on the cheapest way to Russell's Place though.

Make sure to use the ATMs in the opening hours of the bank, in case they swallow your card. Experienced that in Beira. The owner had to discuss for quite a long time to get the card back. The card was in her husbands name, and he was on the other side of the globe.
It's a good thing to have a backup, for example an extra card and a lot of cash. I brought a lot of dollars which I changed in Indian shops to a better rate than the bank's rates. Don't make exchanges on the streets. I don't think it's legal and you may get some trouble with the police.
