Hi,

My partner and I have been planning another trip to Southern Africa for August 2010.

We have already booked accomodation in the Kruger in Berg-en-Dal and Lower Sabie camps for 4 nights at the beginning of our trip.
We then hope to cross the border at Komatipoort into Mozambique and spend the rest of our holiday there diving etc.
I have travelled in South Africa several times before while my partner has travelled extensively in Southern Africa, particularly Mozambique (though this was 10 years ago)

My question is it still possible to rent a car to drive into Mozambique and back?
I have looked so far at Thrifty - says no rentals available, Europcar - Could find no info on cross border rentals and AVIS - says rentals to Mozambique have been suspended.

Does anybody know a company that still rents cars to drive into Mozambique? (Even better if you have done this yourself in the last few months)

We are really excited about planning this holiday and would be really disappointed if we needed to change our plans.

Many thanks.

Laura

You can still hire a 4x4.

Try First Car Rental. I have spent almost half a year in South Africa and I found it by far the cheapest car rental company (and it is reliable, insurance, etc.) I only do not know hom much it would be for a 4x4. I rented my car in Cape Town, but I presume they also have an office in Johannesburg.

You absolutely can do this: I did it myself in October. Just tell the rental company that you want to go Mozambique and they will sort out the paperwork for you. Can't remember offhand what rental company I used but I will check later and let you know. In outline though, it should be simple.

I checked. I used a mob called SouthAfrica-CarHire (www.southafrica-carhire.com). Far as I can tell, they're a broker that searches out the best deals. I actually got my car from Hertz, even though the booking was made through this othet firm. They were good value for money too.

Thanks so much for the replies.

We have had a look at the companies suggested and both seem very reasonable.

Looks like our holiday is back on track again!!!

Mozambique here we come, well in 8 months time : )

Hi Laura,

Tempest car hire allows you to take their cars in at a cost of ZAR 1000 but make sure you get the paperwork. Check out www.tempestcarhire.co.za. Their rates are pretty good too.
