Hello, any1 looking for travel buddies here? I'm a 27 yr old reasonably experienced backpacker who is travelling on a budget - so cheapy guesthouses only for me i'm afraid! (but the cheaper, the more fun!) I'd like to meet more backpackers. I am from Manchester but live and study in Amsterdam. I am here until the 30th May, and have so far been to Casablanca, Marrakech and am now in Essouera, & Agadir. I'm now bk in M'kch; I would like to see as mich as possible while i'm here, and like to get off the beaten track where possible, but not alone. I speak basic french, obviously very useful here, English and a bit of Spanish. My very rough plan is to go north now, taking in tattiouine, fes, maybe the Atlas, Volubilis, Ketama and Chefchaouen, & poss the Mediterranian coast. I'm open to the idea of trekking and like to meet the locals. Anyone out there? :o)

Yeah, i'm thinking i should avoid there now, following the advice of several people. Lots of unpleasant scams apparently :o( Also been warned away from Tangier...

Tangiers is great, don't let a few pesky touts prevent you from seeing a wonderful place! Ketama, on the other hand, you should avoid. Just too much trouble to risk it.

yes geographile,i agree with #5, tangier is really only a hassle if its youve literally just got off the boat, and youve never been to morocco before.its a great city... it does have a seedy past, but a romantic one too with a lot of important twentieth century artists, writers and travellers having lived here or passed through at some point.the northern coastline was aslo the jumping off point for the arab invasions of europe...so its all happened around tangier!!
its got a great medina/kasbah area to wander around too.
shame about the mcdonalds on the hill tho!!!
ketama's really only a worthwhile trip if youre looking to bulk buy the local kif!

Haha if i wanted kif it seems to be available everywhere, smoked openly in restaurants and shops from casa to fes. I'm not anti, as i do live in amsterdam so am used to being around it, but for the same reason its nothing special. Just curiosity really, to see where its grown, but not at the expense of immense hassles and tourist scams! Great news about Tangier tho, i'll definitely think about giving it a shot now. Sounds like it could b very atmospheric and interesting! Thanks

hey, just posted looking for a travel buddy too, dont know if we are anywhere near crossing paths, would be so much easier to hire car and get around with a second person, so if you are still in the area (agadir) ...
