Hi everyone,

Apologies in advance if this has been asked before but I DID search the forum before posting.

Quick question - The CTM buses to Chef~ from Tangier city port - I looked on Google maps and it looks like the CTM bus station is within walking distance of the port... is that correct? or are there some obstacles that might make this journey difficult. Is this where the buses leave from or is there a bus CTM at the port itself? I was planning to just walk down the road with my suit case (large) and buy a ticket

Thanks.

I don't know from where the CTN buses start, but the "normal" bus and louage terminal is far away from the port where the ferry from Tarifa arrives.

No CTM station in the Tangier port at the moment. CTM operates from the main bus station. Tanger Med shuttle bus also drops passengers at the roundabout next to the main station.

There is much confusion on this subject at the moment, and conflicting advice. I did this trip in September 2010 from Algerciras on the slow ferry to the new port TANGER MED which is about one hour's drive to Tangier city. I got in the Mercedes sixseater collective taxi with four other passengers, the fare was DH200, split four ways, so DH50 each, the taxi dropped me at the CTM bus office at the old Tangier port, on request ,and from there I bought my ticket and boarded the bus for Chefchaouen at the same place, there is no bus station, as such, just the long-established office, Messagerie, waiting room and toilet facilities, located just outside the port gate.
I did the return journey the same way a month later, bought a through ticket to Algeciras (DH195) from an Agency across the street which included the CTM bus transfer and the ferry ticket, the bus connected with the ferry and everything went smoothly, no problems.
However I've heard the CTM transfer from TANGER MED drops passengers at the Gare Routiere (the main public bus station at Place al Jamia al Arabia) but there is no information as to whether it continues to the office at the old port!
I intend doing this trip again, but with Casablanca my intermediate destination in March 2012, so to clarify the situation, I sent an enquiry email to CTM, yesterday, using the form on their website, requesting updated information on whether the port office is still operational, and if the buses still depart from there. As I write this, I'm still waiting for a reply which I will post here when or if received!
If your'e "dumped" at Gare Routiere, there are plenty of private bus companies running to Chefchaouen via Tetouan, I remember TRANSPORT IDEAL had new comfortable buses, I've used them a few times on this route when CTM were full up.On the return journey from Chefchaouen on CTM you must book your ticket one day in advance, the bus originates at FES and is always busy.
Good luck with that heavy suitcase, rather you than me, I always travel "light"!....Miguel.

I did this trip in June this year and it was just as you thought if you arrive in the main Tangier port (not Tangier med). I came across from to Tarifa to Tangier. Just walk off the ferry and keep walking out. Taxi drivers will badger you a bit, just ignore their offers "la shukran" and keep going. If you suitcase has wheels the going is not too bad. I would guess the total distance to be around 500m +/-. Just when you are starting to think that you have made a mistake...the CTM office is just on your right buy a ticket and one for your luggage and jump on the bus to Chefchaouen. It could not be easier. My apologies if this has changed since June this year.

I'm still waiting for an email response from CTM, I sent my enquiry on their website form in French to make it easy for them to understand and reply, but so far no luck, maybe it"s the holiday season causing delays, but having been a regular traveller over the past ten years, with this previously Government-owned bus company which has, in common, with European bus Companies been de-regulated, I have observed their once-excellent service standards decline significantly, with en route mechanical breakdowns not uncommon, leading to disruption in advertised departure and arrival times.

I checked out the Google map, and Gare Routiere appears to be only one kilometre from the new TANGIER VILLE train station, from which there are six departures to CASA VOYAGEURS daily, and an easy walk with light luggage, so maybe this will be my default option for onward connection to Essaouira, if CTM' 'screws up" once again.
If all else fails I'll just revert to my old established "freewheel" mode and see what happens next......maybe I'll get lucky, maybe not....... Miguel.

both train and bus stations are walkable from Tangier city port.

Still waiting for a clear picture of what kind of transit connections are at Tangier Med. Anyone?
I thought there was a free bus over to Tangier town, but Miguel says above that he paid for a taxi.

Of course, if you are a good hiker, you will hav no problem:
about 2 1/2 km from the pier up to the bus station resp 3 km up to the railway station

Hello Intrepitgee, to clarify,

I arrived at Tanger Med from Algeciras on the first ferry (6am), and fell asleep, after I had got my passport stamped on the ferry by the police. As the ferry docked, a Moroccan bloke gave me a shake to wake me up, and we all descended to the car deck to exit the ferry, I was totally disorientated, this was not the old Tangier Port I knew so well, nobody told me when I bought my ticket that the sea route had changed! After all the foot passengers had disembarked, we were transferred by a free bus up to the main terminal, where all passports were re-checked and all luggage went through the big X-ray machine, after which the twenty or so passengers all stood around outside the terminal waiting for the bus transfer to Tangier city which was free and included in the ferry ticket. The clock had gone back two hours since Spain, so it was only around 0630, and still dark, everybody half-asleep and no sign of any transfer bus, but two or three Mercedes taxis were parked up. The bloke who woke me up on the ferry appointed himself to take charge of the situation, it turned out he was a CTM bus driver returning home on holiday after completing a European tour, he spoke good English, so we got to talking about this and that, and he found out that the first transfer bus to Tangier city would not arrive until 0730. He rounded up one woman and two blokes who were willing to share the taxi, so we all paid DH50 each, the total fare to hire the taxi would be a fixed price of DH200. Everything went smoothly and the taxi dropped me, on request at the CTM office at old Tangier port, the others stayed on to be dropped off elsewhere. If I had waited for the free transfer bus at Tanger Med,I was told it would go directly to the CTM office at old Tangier port, however I have read on this forum and elsewhere that it only drops off passengers at Gare Routiere, Place Al Jamia al Arabia. This is where the confusion arises, I sent an enquiry email to CTM to clarify this, but, to date, have received no reply. I hope all this makes sense, in Morocco not everything is what it appears to be, but you just have to get used to it!!.....................Miguel.
