Hi, we're going to Morocco in a couple weeks going from Marrakesh, to Fes, to Tangiers. We would like to get to either Volubulis or Chefchaouen before going to Tangiers. Is it possible to do either of these "en route"? Is it possible to visit either place during the day after leaving Fes and arrive in Tangiers that night? What are our transit options and how much should we expect to pay for bus, taxi, or whatever mode of transportation it will take?
Thanks in advance for your advice,
- Dom

Yes, it's sort of possible. Chefchaouen would be much easier than Volubilis; here's why:
To visit Volubilis from Fez, the best way is to take a grand taxi. After that, you could take a grand taxi back to Moulay Idriss (or Meknes, or Fez) to go to Chefchaouen via another grand taxi or a bus (from the latter two), or you could buy out an entire grand taxi and get the driver to take you to Volubilis then Chefchaouen, but that would be more expensive, by a long shot.
To get to Chefchaouen from Fez, on the other hand, is easy - the best way is to simply take the CTM bus which runs once (or perhaps twice) a day from Fez to Chefchouen, directly. You can also take a less expensive bus from the main Fez "gare routiere" to Chefchaouen, but it makes many stops along the way and thus takes a lot longer.
From Chefchouen to Tangier, there are buses and grand taxis.
For about 1200 dhs or so you could hire a grand taxi from Fes to take you to Tangier via Chefchaouen, and Tetouan, which is worth at least a look and is a reasonable distance from Tangier. The benefit of hiring the grand taxi is that you can ask him to stop along the way to take pictures, something you'll definitely want to do if the wildflowers are still blooming in a few weeks time. Just came down that way and the scenery is gorgeous!

I was wondering, how long is the bus from Fez to Chefchaouen and then Chefchaouen to Tangier? How does that compare to the grand taxi route from Fez to Tangier via Chefchaouen and Tetouan?

Anyone happen to know when the CTM bus that goes through Chefchaouen leaves from Fes?
thanks.

I seem to remember the bus from Fez to Chefchaouen being a surprisingly long 5+ hours, and it was CTM. But maybe I remember it wrong. If that is the case you would be pushing it to do Fes - Chaouen - Tanger in a day. I think the bus I took left Fes around 10am but again I'm not sure.... There is more than one a day.

Hi,
How long does a Grand-Taxi take to take you from Fez to Chefchaouen?
Would you choose Chefchaouen over Volubilis? Why?
Thanks.

The grand taxi took about 3-4 hours, if I remember correctly. It's more en-route to Tangiers (another 2 hours from Chefchauen) and Chefchaouen is really charming. We were super happy to have visited it. I personally wasn't too keen on Roman ruins, and besides, the museum in the kasbah in Tangiers has a beautiful fresco sacked from Volubulis anyways.
