I'm not into New Year's Eve much but my girlfriend and I will find ourselves in Fez on that night. We'll be with another couple and don't want to get gouged. But places like the Ruined Garden and L'Amandier are doing just that. Does ANYONE have a recommendation for a local restaurant that will have its normal menu? We arrive Dec. 28. We may have time to scout around but it may be too late to get a reservation.

Most of the restaurants will have their normal menu. However, they will close early, because New Year's is not a particularly important date for Moroccans. If you want to stay somewhere until midnight and celebrate, it will only be at a place for foreign tourists or the local upper-class, and you can expect to pay a large sum for that opportunity.
I can recommend my usual eatery in Fes el Bali Medina, a short distance from the blue gate Bab Boujloud, I always return here each time I'm in Fes each year, because the food is good and safe, with no rip-off on the final bill which seems to be almost 'epidemic' in Morocco nowadays.
This Tripadvisor review is dated 2015 but last year and this year it was my only 'safe' eatery, the panoramic roof terrace is ideal for people-watching below, provided it's not raining, which it might well be on your visit, if so, retreat to any of the lower elegant salons.....
Knowing the type of friendly Fassi Jewish owners of this establishment, I think they will do their best to squeeze you in, even without a reservation.
New year is not my favourite time of the year, but I think there may be some action in the Hotel Batha Churchill snug bar with its log fire hearth , or in the discotheque to the rear of the bar, in Independence Square, open to non residents on the first floor and my regular evening 'watering hole' when I'm back in town every year.
