The area round Hotel Essaouira has plenty of cheap hotels for around £6. No need to book; you will get in somewhere. Just walk around and ask. Only the pricier places can afford a website.

Good point. The first place is their pricier option on the corner.

If you do choose to book in advance it is best to book by phone. However it is probably unneccessary at that time unless you really have your heart set on a particular hotel.

I have always been under the impression that ad-hoc visits to hotels was an expensive way to do business as they generally charge the full rate(whatever that may be) and that booking via the internet was cheaper as booking agencies were able to acquire preferential rates.
I go to the same hotel in Agadir each year, am asked how many times I have visited to date and even if I say seven times I get no discount and that costs me around £40 / €60 per night for a standard room.
I know tourist hotels are more pricey (I pay around £53 / €78 per night in Marrakech) and would like to know what a riad or dar with a good reputation would charge in Marrakech, the choice is overwhelming.
