My husband and I are travelling from NYC to Marrakech and Essouira next week and we will be staying in people's homes while on vacation. What types of gifts are thoughtful and appropriate for our hosts and the people who work for them? One host has a groundskeeper (male) and a cook (female), and another host is a young teacher.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Stephanie

Actually the most appropriate gifts are hand made sweet biscuits bought from the local Moroccan patiserrie. These are produced with different ingredients such as nuts, chocolate, sesame seed and marzipan and are of very good quality. You can get these cheaply at about 80Dh/€7 ($10?) per kilo from the smaller bakers and these are just as good quality as those bought from the smart, large, expensive chain bakers at 170Dh/€15 ($20?) per kilo.
These will be greatly appreciated and can be enjoyed by all.

Thanks to both of you. We went and bought a small bottle of perfume, and will look forward to buying the pastries once we arrive.

Chocolate...Moroccans love their sweets and chocolate is something they would sleep with in their mouth.

Gifts from inside or outside of the country are appropriate, although local cookies will go over very well, don't worry.

I'd say you ought to pick up some chocolate before you go - Hershey, Lindt, Reese's are all unavailable in Morocco. Oh, and Toblerone!

Unfortunately it really doesn't work to take chocolate into Morocco in high summer. It's just a matter of the heat.

buy the choc at the airport and put it in a cool bag it was fine. Also they enjoyed carrot cake, pineapple upside down cake, peanut butter, lemon curd, key rings, music cds (bought plenty on ebay. Also bought a portable DVD player and films on ebay - they didnt mind second hand goods either as we can afford to buy more little things then. Little and many rather that expensive and few.

Oh yeah, New York keychains went over really well with students of mine. And ainzerka, I've brought chocolates in July without incident.

Buying is one thing; transporting is another. Good chocolate melts.

It's hotter here than in Marrakech....
