We are traveling with a group tour but in Erfoud the tour will be taking a camel ride into the dessert. We have done this in India and would like to opt out to explore Erfoud on our own. Any recommendations on what to do?

Not much worth seeing in Erfoud. There's a workshop cutting fossil-bearing rocks into kitchen worksurfaces. That's about it. But surely your guidebook would have told you that anyway?

You do have a guidebook?

Yes, I have a guide book but I am looking for personal recommendations, not things in guidebooks.

Well it was a personal recommendation. There's some fossil shops otherwise nothing within walking distance other than to hang out at a pavement cafe and watch the world go by.

You could get a taxi and go south east down the R702 to the fossil beds at Merzane.

Or you could go in the opposite north west direction on the R702 to visit the ancient underground canals (khetteras) which consist of hundreds of shafts that are joined up underground. At the spot identified on the following map below you can descend into the canal to explore: https://tinyurl.com/yco7tao5

And near those underground canals Near Jorf you can find a few very interesting places like Stairway to Heaven, City of Orion, Golden spiral but for to reach there you need 4x4, so ask your hotel if they can arrange the trip there. It is marvellouse to see it, even if it have nothing to do with Morocco can I say. But localization in the desert is perfect for such masterpiece.

We travel because we need to. Because the distance and difference are the secret tonics to the creativity. When we get home, home is still the same, but something in our minds has changed, and that changes everything.

Tim, these khetteras fascinate me. I could find history of them, etc but could find nothing about getting in and exploring them. The map url you gave, shows them (man there are alot of them!) but I am having trouble identifying where you can get in them.....

The location I pinpointed on the map is the exact location for one of the access tunnels. As you drive west through Jorf, keep your eyes out on the right of the road and there's a big sign saying something like, 'Visite des Canals'.

And the Stairway to Heaven mentioned above: http://www.morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/showthread.php?t=190
