Chefchaouen and Oued Laou area - interesting side trips?

Planning on spending some time in this area in August as part of our summer trip (Tanger-Chefchaouen-Oued Laou-Tanger). May stop for a night at Le Caiat between Chefchaouen and Oued Laou (and visit the waterfall at Akchour either from there or from Oued Laou). Would be interested in any recommendations for this area (day trips, food, etc). Will have a rental car, so it would be nice to make use of it.

I would also like to visit the Talassemtane National Park from Chefchaouen. Is this possible as a day trip? Thinking a walk, and maybe a picnic, and obviously the car would be useful to get to a higher altitude :-) There is a gite up that way, I think, but presumably up a piste (not really on with a hire car unless I know the piste is in good condition)? Otherwise, I think access is via the N2 a bit past Bab Taza - is this doable without kif sellers en route? At what point on the N2 road does this become an issue? It looks like there may be park access near Cherafate?

Hi @suiko,

We took a shared taxi from Chefchaouen to the walking tracks for Akchour and it was a lovely day trip. It doesn't look like you're going as far as Fes, but we also liked visiting Moulay Idriss, Meknes and Volubilis from there too.

I drove from Chefchaouen via Bab Taza on N2, but turned on R419 then towards Taboud and haven't met any kif seller. Once one car was waving but I didn't care about and continued and that was all. The road is quite bad, but doable to drive on, nice around and exciting trip it was in any case. But never gone to Cherafate so there I not know how the road was.

We travel because we need to. Because the distance and difference are the secret tonics to the creativity. When we get home, home is still the same, but something in our minds has changed, and that changes everything.

Thanks! I will be visiting Akchour, but will be doing that from Caiat or Oued Laou - what I wanted to do from Chaouen was to go in the opposite direction, up to the higher mountains.

I did think about the R419, Khamlia - hi :-) -but it would be there and back the same way, and there isn't anything specific to see that way. is there? (though I am sure it is attractive scenery of course)

No, it is nothing specific, but the barrage El Wahda is nice and you can do one circuit from R419 over to R408 to Taounate from where on N8 to N2 and back. You can look a some pictures and even the way on my blog - http://moroccoresan.blogspot.se/search/label/Northern%20Morocco

No one seems to know anything about this. I'm tempted to take the car up to Cherafate or Khamis M'Diq, but there doesn't seem to be any info anywhere about short walks one might be able to do.
