We are a couple planning on going to Morocco in July for 1 week and would be interested to hear from anyone on places to go/stay/visit. As time is short, we would like to chill, shop a little but mostly would like to stay somewhere 'authentic' - not too pricey though! We are very independent travellers and certainly don't mind going off the beaten track, however we are also happy to visit the touristy spots if they are worthwhile. We are open to all suggestions and look forward to hearing from you!

Hmmm...one week in July? I'd say beach. The interior will be quite hot at that point, and I think you'll enjoy the coast a lot more. Do you want to stay in one place most of the time?
I would consider visiting two different beach towns to get a feel for two parts of the country. My personal favorites are Asilah, in the north (and very close to Tangier, which you could visit for the afternoon) and Essaouira in the south, though the latter is quite touristy at times. Asilah is dirt cheap, the beaches are empty for the most part outside of August, and the medina is really clean and beautiful. Essaouira is extremely popular because of the Gnawa Festival every June, but has a lot to offer all year round. You could also venture to Marrakech for a day if you wanted to, but it'll be HOT.
Just my two cents.

I stayed in marrakech and essaouira in march, i would definately recommend essaouira for two or three days, its very quaint, and although a little touristy, it still has a unspoilt feel to it. bare in mind that it can be very windy, so take a good scarf or hat for long hair! the beach is absolutely amazing, and if you can, buy some fresh fish.. have been told you can take this to some restaurants and for a small fee they will cook it for you there and then. definately a bohemian feel to the place, i am actually returning there in june for the music festival, i loved it so much!!!

I would also very strongly recommend visiting the Atlas mountains for a day trip... we stayed in a fantastic riad in marrakech ( Riad J'Bel Lakhdar) and were taken by one of the brothers who owned it (Jamal) to a little village in the mountains called Imlil, (about an hour and a half drive by car from marrakech) the views are absolutely breathtaking, my jaw was on the floor for most of the day.... you may need a local guide or someone who knows the area to take you there or at least show you round once you get there.. its very unassuming, but hugely inspiring. Its a MUST!
