In their song disappear , the popular band R.E.M has mentioned Agadir, Taroudannt, Oulmouc .
I would really appreciate if someone can enlighten me with the motive of mentioning those small towns in the world ,particularly, Taroudannt and Oulmouc which I suppose is a berber village on the high atlas? does anyone know where it is located?
In general, much of the singers lyrics are connected to their own experiences and try to tell us about them. So does anyone know about the moroccan R.E.M experience?
the disppear lyrics are here the lyrics
But there is another lyrics version where "Tel Aviv and Agadir, Taroudannt or Oulmouc" is replaced by "Tel Aviv and Agadir
Tone deaf for almost" ? Here is the link
the lyrics
So, what's the original version ?the music I have is with the 1st lyrics.
I would love to know your favourite west-music about Morocco? or the moroccan towns.
thanks in advance

I don't really understand the significance, but Tel Aviv is clearly an Israeli city, and the northern cities&villages in Morocco were often occupied by Jewish communities, so there may be a link there. Also, the Berber people, who were nomadic, are thought to be descendants of the Aincient Egyptions, as are the Bedouine, so another possible link there perhaps-as in where have these aincient nomadic people dissappeared to? It could also be a dig at grande/commercial tourism, erroding the indigenous peoples ways of life, in Michael Stipe's opinion perhaps. But, actually, i guess it could mean anything or nothing!

Never heard of this, but here are the lyrics to Marrakech Express. Actually Brian Jones was the big influence at the time. I was unfortunately a little young, but several of my older friends did go to Morocco. Everyone loved it, and I heard both wonderful and horrible things.

BTW (and this is mainly for AlifBaa), I happened to see a bit of Casablanca on television last night, and I most admit I looked up from my book (Saints and Sorcerers by Nina Epton, actually) when Rick had the band start playing La Marseillaise. It was truly stirring.

Why should Olomouc be in Morocco? I read the song text and it seems to me, as tel Aviv is also not in Morocco, that Olomouc is neither. I googles and found that Olomouc in in the Tschech Republic:
Olomouc

Hello there ,
I was surfing when I suddenly come across your post.Actually , i am from taroudant.I am a native citizen of this city. And I also visit Agadir too coz it is just 80 kms from Tarouadnt. The fact that this aratist mentioned it is that maybe he visted Taroudant and Agadir.I have no idae about " Oulmouc"...there is no place with that name in Taroudant as far as I know or perhaps the spelling is not correct.I have no idae about this artist..maybe if he was famous at the time of Hipis in 1960 s and 70 s, he could vist These places and mention them .....another explantion : since he metioned TelAviv and Taroudant in the song , we can infer why he mentined it : there were many Jewish peple who used to live inTaroudant in a place caled "El Mallah"....the reason why many jewish people are buying properties in Taroudant nowadays....If you like , you can contact me at : watasrga@yahoo.com

while posting here, I already had two hypoteses for the significance and motive for mentionning Taroudannt..:
. the first one is that Taroudannt is famous for the luxe hotel "la gazezlle d'or " which is popular of hosting many celebrities, particularly : Jack Chirac, Nicole Kidman..So, I thought R.E.M probably were one of the hotel guest , and from there getting the inspiration for composing the song.
the second one is that Taroudannt had a condiderable jewish community, the town has a melah .Moreover, the jewish celebrate an annual festival in the region of Ouled berhil . So , is the village to be the vanishing point?
So, my aim of posting was to confirm either hypotesis, or having a new real motive.
I did a search on the R.E.M fan website and I found that Oulmouc is in czech Republic. I did not know of any village with that name on the high Atlas, but the name sounds berber like "Tamaloukt".
TasrgaTasrga reminds me of old memories, its a village in the Imaoun commune, Ighram. So, is it from there you got your nickname? is that your bled?I live in Taroudannt too
R.E.M is an american rock band formed in the 80s, you probably have listened to their " Losing my religion" one of my favorite.
