I will be in Eastern Africa this summer and I am looking for a beach anywhere really, but I plan to be in Madagascar for at least a week in early Aug. Are there any suggestions of good swimming beaches. I don't mind heavy surf, but I would like to avoid a huge crowd. Also I don't want to spend more than $30 a night if possible. Also I will be traveling alone or maybe with another woman so safty is a bit of an issue, however i don't scare that easy.

Hello All
I am planning 2 week trip to Madagascar in September. Because this will be our honeymoon and we do not have much time, I would like things to run smoothly. Thus I have been in contact with companies in Madagascar that run tours.
Their quotes are about 1500-2300 euro per person. This is for a 2 week 'private' tour with mid range hotels and includes 1 internal flight.
Is this a reasonable price?
Would it cost less if I arranged a tour upon arrival in Tana?
Is a tour necessary? If we chose a…

Is there anyone currently in madagascar who can give me an idea of the problems the current troubles are causing for tourists - eg security, reliability of internal flight schedules, attitude of locals to tourists etc? UK foreign office advice is now against travel, do you see the situation calming over the next 4 weeks? I do hope we can still visit - this trip has been a long time in the planning and we have really looked forward to it.
Does anyone have suggestions of travel insurers who will…

I went to Madagascar with my son almost exactly one year ago. We got there on THE day the worst cyclone in recorded history hit the island. To make things more fun, our cell phones didn't work with any of the local providers, my bank decided that Madagascar was just not the place to which transactions could be authorized and one of our packs got "mislaid" in OR Tambo airport. If you know anything about Johannesburg I needn't explain; if not, just make sure you have all your essentials in the…

hello!
we are a couple off to madagascar in september '09 for three weeks. we'll be travelling on a budget of about 1000 euros and are perfectly happy avoiding posh restaurants, staying in cheaper/budget accommodation, travelling by taxi-brousse and avoiding the big national parks. knowing it's such a huge island, and that travel isn't particularly fast when on a budget we intend to stay in the north of the island. we have our hearts set on travelling over to ille st marie for a few days, but…

Hotel Lambert

I was in Madagascar (Mada) for 3 weeks in January 2009. I stayed at Hotel Lambert. This is a small friendly hotel on the Ambondrona stairs run by a friendly french man and his wife. I had a room on the top floor with amaizing 180 degree views of Tananarivo (Tana) and centre ville ! The hotel serves good well priced food and the relaxed atmosphere is good for any one starting out on a long back-pack journey into the interior or wanting a good time in Tana. I met a lot of french comedias and…
