Hello,

when visiting MADA in May/June 09, we (2 person) wish to include the TSINGYS, but, WITHOUT doing the Tsiribihina-River Trip!

The plan is, once in TULEAR (by Road from TANA) to fly to MORONDAVO.

I came across in some?? travel books, that it is possible: a) to hire a 4 WD vehicle with driver from MORONDAVO to BEKOPAKA & the TSINGYS.
b) to take a flight from MORONDAVO over the TSINGYS.
c) Is it interesting, culture & scenic wise (for photography etc) to return from MORONDAVO by hire car/driver, making a few o'night stops on the way
to TANA, or, rather fly this route, because the Road-trip isn't worth the time?

Has anyone done the above recently, or, has correct knowledge of this situation?
WHAT WHERE THE COSTS AND, "WHOM" COULD I CONTACT IN MORONDAVO, since we DON'T want to join an already pre-programmed
tour, which some operators offer. (in our experience, there is always much more FREEDOM/FLEXIBILITY in such a trip, to just hire an appropriate vehicle/driver, pay the daily rate, plus fuel, than being "stuck" to the tour-timetable).

Thank You,

Willy

The road trip from Morondava is very rough and dusty, and one of the least scenic in the country.
It is actually doable by public transport, but to reduce the pain and make things easier, most tourists seem to go on a small-group tour organized in Morondava, which uses an AC 4WD and makes stops at the Baobab Avenue and in Kirindy Forest.
It would be very easy to hire a car just for yourself, but I honestly doubt it would make much difference.
To get the best deal, wait till you get to Morondava, and ask around there.

Hi,
you have couple of possibilities.
I think the best will be to rent a taxi (not 4x4) in Morondava. You should start morning, by the road you will visit Baobab avenue, some tombs, "holly" baobab etc. Taxi will bring you to Tsymafana - at the left border of Tsirbihna Riv. Then you should find there boat (not a big ferry but much faster boats). Boat will bring you to Belo. I recomend you to go to Susana Hotel and ask there about renting 4x4 to tsingy. Trip to Tsingy is 1 day go, a and 1 day back to Belo. Usually peoples visit at 1 day Big Tsingy, and next one gorge and small tsingy (2 days total). Hired car will transport you back to Morondava.
Road from Morondava to Tana was recently repaid at the Malaimbandy-Miandrivazo part, but it is still not a very good road. Most beautiful part of this road is between Miandrivazo and Antsirabe - beautiful highland landscapes. From Morondava to Tana by car is about 1.5-2 days, From Belo directly to Tana is about 2 full days (it depends on driver).
Generally drivers in Madagascar do not travel long distances by night.
Good luck!

Thank you, ALFWAGEN,

well, YOUR plan suggests exactly the same things we what to do, just, in REVERSE. (going to MORONDAVA/TSINGYS first, then to TULEAR and from there, via IASALO etc, back to TANA)

Would you please let me know, WHAT CAR (type, model, age) you have on offer and, how much does the car & driver cost p.day, since we might want to go to ILALAKA and, mostlikely PERINET/ANDASIBE on the way to TANA as well. This could take around 14 days?!
FUEL: How much must we plan for PETROL for the whole trip/distance? What does accommodation in 3* Hotels cost p.night?

Thank You!
