Hi everyone,

this post to inform travellers to Madagascar that Travellers cheques cannot be converted, if you cannot present your passport (of course) and the purchasing receipt.
I have been asking in several banks such as Société Générale and Credit Agricole but none would accept them. There Ihave been some problems (they said).

I had this problème in Morondava and Majunga. I cannot tell for Tana

Travellers cheques are a perennial problem in Madagascar, and success in getting them changed is likely to be a hit-and-miss affair. Some people on this forum have said they've never had any problems, others have had experiences similar to Valrouge's.

One thing is quite clear though: you'd be very unwise to put yourself in a position where you absolutely have to rely for money on getting your travellers cheques changed. The best solution is to take cash (euros or US dollars), even quite large amounts, properly concealed, and a Visa debit card / ATM card.

I have a Madagascar bank account, and the branch manager has told me that he never knows from one week to the next what the position will be with travellers cheques. He needs head-office (=Tana) authorization, and if there's the slightest doubt, he'll refuse them.
