I'm going to be travelling in Madagascar on a tight budget. I'm hoping to take a southern route, visiting national parks and doing a lot of hiking. Is it worth bringing a tent and sleeping bag? I've heard that some of the parks don't have much of a tourist infrastructure and it might be best to bring my own 'housing.' Also, I've heard it can get very cold at night in areas, and a serious sleeping bag is suggested. Any thoughts? I'll be there for a month.
Thanks!
Kate

If you plan some MORE hiking it is worth taking a sleeping bag. If you have really light tent (around 2-3 kg) it is worth also. Having your own equipmnent makes you independent. Some guides in national parks have equipment for rent, but it's quality is usually poor.
We made some trekkings in Andringtra NP, Isalo NP and Akarana NR - we had our own sleeping bags but not tent. We took it from our guides. The tents were OK, mainly due to dry weather :-) It was quite cold at night in higer parts of Andringtra NP in November, so sleeping bag was necessary.

Hi. During my visit of madagascar I have slept almost always in my tent (exception being few visits of towns) and it helped me to save lots of time and some money too. I enjoyed it a lot as many of Madagascar national parks have developed tent sites helping you to keep your tent relatively dry. Some parks have been also quite cold so sleeping bag was also essential.

I have been to Madagascar in June/July 2010 and put a detailed trip report on the internet where you may find information about my experience in many parks - if interested check it out at.. my site .

Have a good trip.
