Hello !

I'm flying to Madagascar on the 15th october for ten weeks. It's the first time i'm travelling for so long outside of Europe and I'm completely on my own. I would like to combine backpacking with local volunteering for free accomodation and/or food, is that possible ? Are there any local organisation who are looking for volunteers ? I was also asking myself, is it easy to find places where you can meet other backpackers ? And where should I look for cheap, but decent accomodation ? Do you guys know some good places ? Also, how would you plan those ten weeks ? What would you recommend ? If you have any furter advise, i would be very glad to hear it. I'm so excited, my dream is coming true !

You are leaving in a month to do backpacking and volunteering and have not organised either the volunteering or the backpacking accommodation? Seems to me like you have spent too much time dreaming and not enough planning. Start googling.

Get a guidebook first: Bradt is recommended. I would also get a map. Learn some basic French if you don't know any. When you get there learn some basic Malagasy. With regard to work for accommodation for a short time it is generally not worth it for the Malagasy but if you find anywhere please let us know. What do you regard as cheap but decent accommodation? Different people have different ideas. You won't find hostels and one of the delights, for me, of the country is that there are not that many travellers there.

Wishing you a great trip in a beautiful country. Please share your experience here when you get back.

Thanks for your answer ! I know about the Bradt guidebook and i was getting one tomorrow. I will aso get some maps and study them as good as I can. Probably I will start by going to the south on the RN7. But after that, I don't know where to continue. Should i go back north by the west coast or go to the other coast ? What would you recommend ?

Fortunately i'm a native French speaker so that won't be a problem.

And for accomodation, i'm not difficult. I just want to be able to sleep safely for a low budget. I imagine some times I will have to sleep in expensiver accomodations because i have no other choice. Do you have any recommendations ? I also read about sleeping in national parks. Do you have experience with this ? I I won't have any place for a tent to bring with me so I hope the tents in the national parks will be in good shape.

Thanks for your help ! It's one of the main reason i wanted to go to Madagascar is because there are less travellers than in other countries.

I will certainly share my experience with you all when I'm back
