I WOULD LIKE TO REFUTE THE MYTH GOING AROUND THAT A SELF DRIVE IN MADAGASCAR IS UNSAFE , THIS IS COMPLETE RUBBISH , MY WIFE AND I HAVE BEEN DRIVING 2000 KM THE LAST 3 WEEKS HERE IN MADA AND ITS COMPLETELY SAFE AND MUCH BETTER THAN HAVING A DRIVER ALWAYS HANGING ABOUT .
WE RENTED A GOOD SMALL 4WD FROM A FRENCH GUY HERE IN TANA www.locationvoituremadagascar.lagrandeile.com
his name is philipe cell +261320441680 its around 50 euro a day and u pay for your fuel. HE ONLY SPEAKS FRENCH SO RATHER SEND HIM AN E MAIL SO HE CAN TRANSLATE .

Hello,
that is true but... only on main roads. Majority of malagasy roads are really bad and even for malagasy drivers they are dificoult. There is no signs, nobody speak french or english etc. If you will have some car problems without driver as translator or/and guide you will have serious problems.
Conclusion - if you go by main roads (from Tana to Morondava, Mahajanga, Tulear, Diego etc) self-driving is very easy. But if you go in some not touristic places it is sure that you will have serious problems, even at some National Roads - example Ivato-Malaimbandy.
