Hi travellers!

I am just back from a 4-week trip to Madagascar with my girlfriend. It has been wonderful and the Lonely Planet guide has helped us get around like locals :)

Anyway, there are two quite recent things which are not yet in the latest release.

  1. The FCE railway connecting Fianarantsoa and Manakara is not working, and it looks like it will not be working in the near future. The train has to be repaired and some replacement parts are necessary.

Rumour has it that the replacements are already there, and that the whole thing is one signature away from getting back up and running. Again, according to the rumour, the only thing holding that signature back is the fact that the government does not want foreigners to see the abject poverty scenes this train ride would reveal.

Please note how clearly I have divided facts and gossip. I just want to give as much info as possible.

  1. The bridge in Manakara across the canal has broken down. It seems a way-too-heavy truck and the poor state of the structure are to blame. If you want more info and some pictures, please visit my blog.

Hope it helps! Nice travelling!

I am researching and planning a trip to Madagascar. But dont know yet when I will go. Probably february-march 2013. I just want to ask you about the language. Do you or you girlfriend speak french? I only speak english, so I hope to get by on that.

Hi TheSwede!

My girlfriend does speak some French, and I am Spanish (from San Sebastian, a town very near to the French border). It is not difficult for Spanish native speakers to understand basic French conversations and my girlfriend usually took care of the talking.

However, I think you'll be fine with just English. We met a Danish guy during the trip in your same situation and he got along just fine. It would be a good idea if you took a small phrasebook with you (there is one in the Lonely Planet's Madagascar guide :p).

Nice Travelling!
