Hi,

we are 4 people arriving in Tana on Oct 23th at 11PM, we plan to rent a 4x4 and do the following itinerary. We would very much appreciate some feeback. Is this itinerary possible or too ambitious? Any better suggestions?

Oct 23: arrive in Tana
Oct 24: Morning visit of Tana, 11AM drive to Miandrivazo, sleep there (enough time to stop in Antsirabe?)
Oct 25: Morning, drive to Morondava, afternoon in Morondava
Oct 26: Morning transfer to Bekopaka
Oct 27: Visit Grand Tsingy de Bemaraha
Oct 28: visit Manambolo gorge
Oct 29: Transfer back to Morondava
Oct 30: Morning 4x4 transfer to Belo sur Mer (if rainy season is already under way, how much is a motor boat transfer?)
Oct 31: Visit Belo sur mer
Nov 01: Return to Morondava
Nov 02: drive to Fianarantsoa
Nov 03: Visit Ranomafana national park
Nov 04: drive to airport, return home.

thanks!

Hi there!
Though I Never made it to Madagascar I am long reading and preparing and confident to give you a small advice:
Dont do as you planned at at starting day 24 Oct. and last day Nov. 04.
FIRST: Day 24 oct you will be jet lagged and veery fresh to confront the risks of visiting Tana which is the most dangerous place for hustling and so. And you donot do any justice to the city on a couple of hours visit this way. Also DoNot start your long day travel to Miandrivazo on 11 am.
Advice: start the road travel as early as you can (suggest before 9am) and leave the Tana visit for your last day.
SECOND: You last day (drive to airport Fiana to Tana??) is also something to think again. You should go to Tana a night before. Do everything possible to be at Tana the night before airplane departs. Any last hour inconvenience, even a flat tyre, will be a huge nightmare in rural Madagascar...
Advice: return to Tana a day before airplane departure and visit Tana on your last day, just before the deparure. You will be better experienced to confront the big city and relaxed to catch you flight.
I dont want to comment on the rest of your travel schedule (though I have some ideas just because I think you will not pay attention to them because I lack experience on the ground).
happy travels,
Anas

Much too ambitious and unlikely to work. Suggest you buy a guide, Bradt is recommended and LP produce one as well, and look at the road conditions and journey times. You need to factor in breakdowns and other problems on the road and give yourself plenty of time. Also did you intend to hire a car or a car and driver? Did you intend to use a car or a 4 x 4?
Perhaps do half as much, take it easy and enjoy Madagascar.

Hiya,
Having just spent 18 hours travelling from Tana to morondava, your plan of leaving in the morning and arriving in the afternoon seems ambitious!
We did, however, travel overnight and encountered numerous police checkpoints plus were made to wait at various points so we could travel in convoy (with armed police guards!). At the very least expect it to take about 12 hours but be prepared for longer.
We also stopped for over an hour to help a broken down vehicle plus had numerous tyre issues of our own.
Arrived here in morondava about 2 hours ago so pretty exhausted but enjoyed the adventure!

Hi scottymac_75, thanks for the reply. Actually the plan is to drive from Tana to Morondava in 2 days, spend one night in Miandrivazo. Were you traveling in a private 4x4 rental?

Hi,
No, we were in a taxi brousse (a sprinter, slightly more comfortable than some of the others). There's only problems if u reach certain points after dark, so u will be absolutely fine. We ignored all (sensible) advice not to travel after dark but, hey, what an adventure!

Hi my friends,
thanks for reading my comments. Once you are attracted to the "wild west" of Madagascar and you hire a 4X4 with driver you can keep your plan. Only dont expect everything to happen at schedule. We are experience travellers and like to do elaborate plans to make the most of our travels but this is may not workn on visiting the MAD wild west. So just allow some spare time. The place you can skip (just if you run out of time) is obviously Fianarantsoa and around, but with some luck you can do it.
Happy travel, keep us updated!
Anastas
