North Madagascar - If you hiked through PN de Montagne d'Ambre and/or RS de l'Ankarana independently (i.e. without a tour), could you let me know how you experienced and arranged this? I am wondering about camping gear rental, food supplies and a guide. I understand a guide is required and may be available at the park entrance. We're planning to go in December. Thanks!

Hi. I stayed two months at a small village 20 mins drive, up the road from the entrance to Ankarana working at a village health clinic and school. I visited Ankarana for the day and there are always guides at the entrance. Bradts Guide has all the info you need to know to camp there, but you will need to provision at Diego Suarez (100km) or small and dusty Amilobe (20km). Getting around independently is easy by taxi-brousse.
