Hi, can anyone tell me what is the best way to go to Diego Suarez from Mauritius? Initially my idea was to fly to Antananarivo then to take a flight to Diego Suarez but plane tickets seem really expensive! Please help!

Depends what you mean by 'best'. Most convenient is to fly and cheapest would probably be by ferry and taxi brouse which would take a fair while.

Plane or boat to Réunion where there are direct flights to Diego. Don't know the cost but if you check the Air Austral website you'll get fares.
I once sailed from Toamasina (Tamatave) to Port-Louis on a cargoship. It was not hitching per se (I had to pay $100. That was back in the late 1990's). Look up the MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Compant) folks down at the harbor or try to talk to the harbor master who knows who sails where and when. The only problem doing this is that all Indian Ocean nations require you to show proof of onward travel (out of Madagascar in your case) before they let you in. You also need time!
