Good Afternoon,

I will be in Madagascar in early December, and would like to fly one way from Tana to Sambava.

The prices I am currently looking at (over 300 Euros) are a long way above my budget.

I have two questions, and would be very grateful for anyone's experiences:

  1. Is there an airline other than Air Mad which may be cheaper?
  2. Is it cheaper to book flights at the airport, and if so, what prices would I likely be looking at?

Thank you to anyone who can advise.

Hi Borne,
Can't help you with your other questions, but I just ran a quick check on AirMad and Skyscanner of flights TNR to Sambava for random dates in December. The highest price I could find was 215 Euros, economy class and many at 199 Euros. So look again!

Be sure to start your AirMad search by selecting the Reservation et achat" tab in the upper left hand corner then +Acheter une billet". Also, be sure to select "Ecnonomique" for your class of service. Non-stops appears to be +Sunday, Wed, and Thursday. Skyscanner will offer you more expensive 1-stop flights on other days, and that may explain why you are seeing the higher fare. Good luck.

Air Mad is the only airline with scheduled flights within Madagascar (AFAIK).

Just to supplement the information provided by #1 and #2:

A price of 300+ euros for a one-way flight Tana to Sambava suggests to me a routing via Antsiranana (Diego Suarez) into the weekly direct flight from Diego down to Sambava. The prices for the two one-way flights add up to more than 300 euros. Air Mad have a bad habit on their domestic services of simply adding together the segment prices instead of making allowance for the maximum permitted mileage.

The price on the Air Mad website for a direct flight Tana – Sambava is as cited by TexasTea at #1.

At present, it is always cheaper to book domestic (and if you can work it international) flights in Madagascar at an Air Mad office (not at a travel agency licensed to sell their tickets). In September, I paid around 150 euros without the discount you get for flying Air Mad into the country, and around 115 euros with the discount for a one-way domestic flight selling at 199 euros on the website.

If you think you may not have time to book when you arrive or are afraid that your chosen flight will be booked up, you should consider flying into Madagascar with Air Mad, either from Paris or from one of the African or Indian Ocean points served by them. You’ll often find that even if your international flight is cheaper with another airline, once you add in the cost of one or two domestic flights Air Mad works out cheaper.

Hi,

I booked my domestic flight with http://www.apg-airagencies.com/
110 euro per flight. I booked my international flight from jnb with airmad. Not on their website but with Tix.

good luck

Thank you all for your responses. I was going through SkyScanner, so that might be where I was going wrong.

Looking at the AirMad sight it seemsI arrive on the Sunday just after the flight to Sambava leaves, but there is a flight to Antalaha the following day I may go for instead.

My target is Marojejy, which I shouldn't imagine takes too long to get to from Antalaha?

Thank you for your replies
