For some decades, the government has been promising to rehab and tar the route between Fianar and Ft. Dauphin. Does anyone know if this has actually been done or is it still the bone shattering 2 day hell trip?

Don't know if there is a direct way from Fianar to Fort Dauphin. Anyway, RN7 up to Tulear is O.K. The route from Tulear to Fort Dauphin is terrible. I did it by taxi-brousse and it was a nightmare. The road is bumpy and has not been tarred yet. Off the RN7 road access to Fort Dauphin is possible but not very comfortable. There is also a possibility to skip Tulear and take the turn at Ihosy but that is even a worse road than the first one. Try to avoid the taxi-brousse option if your budget allows so.
