We're planning a short trip to Madagacascar (2 - 3 weeks) next year and can't see that we can get around the country without using domestic air travel.

Is it feasible to fly Tana - Fort Dauphin - Nosy Be - Tana

and use those place as bases for trips to Berenty Reserve, etc?

With only limited time, I can't imagine using buses to get from Tana to Fort Dauphin, plus after ten trips to Africa over the past few years, I am over any bus ride that takes much more than 8 hours!!

Any info on approximate prices for flights would also be useful!

Hi Franck,

A 4x4 may also be an option, although it sounds like a fairly long, tough and expensive journey when a flight might be a lot easier, faster and not much more expensive.

Thanks for your info!

Frankt -

My question in this thread is to find out if there are flights, and if people have used them, whether they would recommend them.

I have at least found a route map, which might be useful for others: Route Map

Hi Soda,

Your route Tana - Fort Dauphin - Nosy Be - Tana can't be completed exactly that simply because there are no flights from Fort Dauphin to Nosy Be. So your route will be Tana to FD, FD to Tana, Tana to Nosy Be, and Nosy Be to Tana.

Since your trip is next year, I guess you haven't yet bought your international tickets? If you are flying into Madagascar with Air Madagascar then you will get 50% discount on all of your internal flights so keep that in mind when choosing your international carrier. If you are making a number of internal flights it can mean a saving of hundreds of dollars. Here's the link to the Air Madagascar page that explains it...

Good luck and have a great trip. You are visiting my two favourite places, Fort Dauphin and Nosy Be :)

The Air Madagascar website has a lot of information, albeit in French.

P.S. Edited to say, yes, from Fort Dauphin you can visit Berenty Reserve, Nahampoana Reserve, Sainte Luce Reserve and many other places. You don't say where else you want to go so I can't give you any further precision.

Hi Dadamanga,

Thanks, that is really useful! Our original plan was to fly to Johannesburg and spend a week or so in RSA first, but I agree that flying Air Madagascar might be financially a better option.

Thanks again!

Hi Soda,

Once upon a time you had to fly long haul (as distinct from "regional" which included Nairobi, Jo'burg, Mauritius and Reunion) to get the discount, but nowadays the words on their website say:

<<From Europe, Asia, Indian Ocean and Africa, with a return international ticket with Air Madagascar, you get 30% discount on Business Class and 50% discount in economy class * on the inside network.>>

So I am assuming that now flying in on what they used to call a "regional" flight is now classed as international and qualifies for the discount, so you could stick to your plan, and fly from RSA to Madagascar with Air Madagascar and still get the discount. I will be doing exactly that in the next two weeks, from Australia to Jo'burg and then on to Mada with Air Mad and will be putting my hand out for my discount, so I will let you know how I go :)

Good luck !!
